The city of Greeley has initiated the search for a new public works director following the departure of Paul Trombino on December 1, 2023. Trombino, who served in this role for four years, joined Greeley in 2021 after previously working as the director and Homeland Security advisor for the state of Iowa. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing several significant city projects, including the Greeley-Weld County Airport improvement initiative and the Mobility Expansion for Regional Growth and Equity program.
During Trombino’s tenure, he also contributed to the Catalyst project, which is preparing for a citywide vote on a zoning ordinance passed by the city council earlier this year. Brian McBroom, the Acting City Manager, expressed gratitude for Trombino’s extensive contributions. He noted, “Paul Trombino has been a tremendous asset to the city. We are grateful for his technical expertise and leadership of daily operations and the many infrastructure projects he championed.”
In addition to the projects mentioned, Trombino played a crucial role in initiating stormwater improvements, which represent a significant investment of $500 million. This initiative aims to address aging infrastructure and enhance the city’s capacity to manage storm events effectively. His efforts also included attracting Alquist 3D, a company specializing in 3D printing for buildings, to collaborate on the Hope Springs project with the Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity.
At the time of his departure, Trombino’s salary was $228,800, according to Greeley Public Information Officer Kim Kappel. The city has not disclosed specific reasons for Trombino’s exit, citing it as a personnel matter without further details.
The city has posted a job description for the new public works director, outlining responsibilities such as managing significant ongoing city projects, securing funding, and ensuring effective communication across various city departments. The anticipated salary range for the position is between $161,900 and $198,350, with a maximum potential salary of $234,800, contingent on the candidate’s experience. For context, the median income for residents in Greeley is approximately $76,462, based on 2024 census data.
Greeley aims to fill the public works director position promptly to maintain momentum on ongoing projects, with no intention of appointing an interim director. Will Jones, the current deputy public works director, is set to take on the role of public works director in Loveland, starting on January 12, 2024.
Additionally, Greeley is also conducting a search for a new city manager following the resignation of Raymond Lee, who was recently named the next city administrator for Portland, Oregon. The transition in leadership underscores the city’s commitment to ensuring effective governance and continuity in its public works and administrative operations.
