Cary Lee Buss, aged 50, of Algona, passed away at her home on November 4, 2025. Her family and friends will gather to celebrate her life on November 23, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Water’s Edge Nature Center at Smith Lake in Algona. The event aims to honor Cary’s vibrant spirit, her infectious sense of humor, and the joy she brought to those around her.
This gathering is open to everyone who knew Cary. Attendees are encouraged to come as they are and share memories, laughter, and stories that reflect her generous nature. Light refreshments will be served, and the family looks forward to celebrating the beauty of her life with all who attend. Cary was born on May 12, 1975, in Britt, Iowa, to Charles Buss and Janice Strayer. She received her education in Garner and Algona, where she graduated from Algona High School. Following her high school education, Cary pursued a career in cosmetology, attending La’James Cosmetology School in Mason City. Throughout her career, she held various positions including cosmetologist, bartender, daycare provider, and most recently, a para educator at Bryant Elementary School in Algona, as well as a cashier at Casey’s.
Cary was passionate about crafting and camping, and she cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren and family. Her generous heart was evident in her willingness to help others and lend a listening ear to those in need.
She is survived by her children: Lacy Wait of Britt, Dakota Wait of Graettinger, and Dylon Wait of Algona. Cary also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Rozlynn, Ryatt, Braxston, Matthew, Kinsley, Braelynn, Oaklynn, Maliah, Clara, Gemma, and Serena. Her mother, Janice Hartman, siblings Janet Strayer, Jeannie Buss, Doug Buss, and Lisa Nelson, and other family members also survive her, including Luke Williams of Algona and several nieces and nephews.
Cary was preceded in death by her father, Charles Buss, her stepfather Merle Hartman, and her grandparents: John and Faye Strayer and Otty and Norma Buss. She also mourned the loss of her nephews, Matthew Strayer and Alex Nelson, her aunt Dort Sandal, and her godfather Gary Sandal.
