The community of Everly is grieving the loss of Gary Lee Scharnberg, who passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on December 26, 2025. Born on October 13, 1943, in Cherokee, Iowa, Gary’s life was marked by his devotion to family, service, and the rural community he cherished.
Early Life and Education
Gary was born to Mildred (Millie) and Robert (Bob) Scharnberg, while his father was serving in the U.S. Navy in Guam during World War II. The correspondence between Gary’s parents served to strengthen their bond despite the distance. When the family returned to their farm near Everly, young Gary excelled as an athlete and scholar. He graduated from Everly High School in 1962 and later attended Buena Vista University, where he majored in chemistry and set records in track events.
After graduating in 1966, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving for nine and a half years and achieving the rank of captain. His military career, which involved work in missile and aerospace defense, took him to various locations, including California, Vietnam, and Australia, where he met his future wife, Sheila Grist Scharnberg.
Family and Community Involvement
Gary and Sheila married in 1975 and returned to Everly to support his family on the farm. They faced the heartbreak of losing their first son, Robert, shortly after birth, but welcomed their son, Michael, in 1978. Gary was deeply involved in his community, serving on boards for local organizations such as the Co-Op Elevator and the United Farmers Telephone Company. He also worked at Christian Sheet Metal beginning in 1998, where he earned the affectionate nickname “Farmer.”
After the death of his father in 2008, Gary became the family patriarch, taking care of Sheila, his mother, and his sister until their passing. Despite life’s challenges, Gary was known for his warm smile, love for nature documentaries, and a fondness for spending time with friends and family over a cold beer.
He is survived by his son, Michael, who provided loving care during Gary’s decline, as well as his siblings, Steven, Janet, and Charles (Chuck), along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
The funeral service for Gary will take place on January 7, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at the Warner Chapel in Everly, with John Jensen officiating. Military services will be provided by the American Legion Everett Boyles Jr. Post 414. After the service, Gary will be interred at Lone Tree Cemetery in rural Everly. Arrangements are being handled by the Warner Funeral Home.
As the community reflects on Gary’s contributions and the legacy he leaves behind, he will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and friend who lived a life filled with love and service.
