A community group focused on supporting individuals with sight loss is reaching out for assistance. My Sight Newark, part of the larger organization Sight Nottinghamshire, is hosting an open meeting on December 16 at Howes Court Community Centre in Newark, with the aim of attracting much-needed volunteers.
The meeting will take place from 11:00 to 12:00, featuring a performance by a blind choir associated with My Sight Nottingham. Attendees can look forward to an engaging atmosphere, complete with singing, coffee, and festive mince pies. The monthly meetings, which typically run from 10:30 to 12:30, also include various social activities such as crafts, art, and gardening, providing a supportive environment for those experiencing sight loss.
Despite the community’s efforts, Vivienne Hall from My Sight Newark has expressed concern regarding the group’s current limitations. The organization is unable to accept additional registered blind individuals due to a shortage of volunteer drivers. Hall emphasized the critical need for more volunteers, stating, “We are keen to send out the message about our local group because we need more volunteer helpers and especially more volunteer drivers to bring people to our meetings.”
The group’s mission focuses on promoting independence among individuals with sight loss, enabling them to engage in activities that many may take for granted. Hall highlighted the importance of community involvement, noting that increased volunteer support would allow the group to expand its services and reach more individuals in need.
My Sight Newark meets on the first, third, and fourth Tuesday of each month, providing a consistent schedule for social interaction and support. As the organization prepares for the upcoming meeting, they are hopeful that community members will respond positively and consider volunteering their time to help those affected by sight loss.
The meeting on December 16 offers a chance for the public to learn more about My Sight Newark’s initiatives and the impact of their work. By fostering a welcoming environment and encouraging community participation, the group aims to enhance the quality of life for individuals with visual impairments in Newark.
