The family of James Rochester Knapp, affectionately known as Jim, commemorates the life of a remarkable individual whose influence shaped Southern California. Jim passed away in 2025 at the age of 89, leaving behind a rich legacy defined by his unwavering faith, sharp intellect, and generous spirit, all deeply rooted in his love for family.
A Life Built in Southern California
Born in 1936 in San Bernardino, California, Jim’s connection to the Golden State was profound. He met his lifelong partner, Sally Diane Dewar, during his youth. Their relationship blossomed during their time at Stanford University, culminating in their marriage in September 1958.
Following their wedding, the couple relocated to San Francisco, where Jim pursued a law degree from Hastings College of Law. This marked the beginning of a distinguished legal career. He initially practiced at Kindel and Anderson in Santa Ana before co-founding the Newport Beach law firm Kalmbach, DeMarco, Knapp and Chillingworth alongside friends Herb Kalmbach, Frank DeMarco, and Sherwood Chillingworth.
As his career progressed, Jim transitioned from law into real estate development, becoming a pivotal figure in shaping the Southern California landscape. He worked at Dunn Properties and Pacific Enterprises, eventually founding Brookhollow in 1973. This venture became a family affair, where Jim took pride in collaborating with his sons and later his grandsons, instilling values of hard work and integrity in the next generation.
Community Engagement and Personal Life
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was deeply committed to community service. He contributed his wisdom to several organizations, serving on the boards of Hoag Hospital and Harbor Day School, as well as Bankers Life of Nebraska. His involvement extended to being a founding member of both The Pacific Club and Big Canyon Country Club, and he held an officer position at Pacific Enterprises.
Jim and Sally enjoyed a fulfilling marriage that spanned an impressive 68 years. Together, they traveled extensively while always prioritizing their family. Jim’s Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life; he regularly read his Bible, listened to respected Christian leaders, and was an active member of Mariners Church.
His remarkable intellect and sharp wit made him a captivating conversationalist. Quietly generous, Jim positively impacted countless lives throughout his community.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Sally Knapp, and their enduring family: children Angi Evans (married to Pete), Greg Knapp (married to Vida), and Tommy Knapp (married to Bethany); niece Donna Miller; and cherished grandchildren Robert Knapp (married to Jillian), James Peter “J.P.” Knapp, Clayton Knapp (married to Lauren), Wilson Knapp (married to Elise), Lance Knapp (married to Maggie), Samantha Knapp Meek (married to Brenden), Sally Evans, Charlie Evans, and George Knapp. He also leaves behind five great-grandchildren: Chloe, Tyler, Mason, Naomi, and Miller, with two more expected in 2026.
A service in Jim’s honor will take place at Mariners Church on December 15, 2025, at 10:30 AM. A private burial will follow at Pacific View Memorial Park. The family takes comfort in knowing that a good and faithful man has completed his journey and is now at home.
In memory of James R. Knapp, the family invites those who wish to honor him to consider planting a living memorial.
