King Charles III announced plans to reduce his cancer treatment schedule starting in 2026, emphasizing the significance of early detection in combating the disease. The monarch, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2024, shared his personal experience and insights in a pre-recorded video message released on December 15, 2023, as part of Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK’s “Stand Up To Cancer” campaign.
In the video, King Charles detailed his treatment journey, which included an intervention for an enlarged prostate. He spent three nights at The London Clinic and received support from his wife, Queen Camilla. Reflecting on the positive impact of early diagnosis, he stated, “Thanks to my early diagnosis and treatment, my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the New Year.”
The King used his platform to advocate for regular cancer screenings, highlighting that early detection can greatly enhance treatment outcomes. He remarked, “Early detection is the key that can transform treatment journeys, giving invaluable time to medical teams—and to their patients, the precious gift of hope.”
King Charles also addressed the emotional weight of a cancer diagnosis, sharing that it can feel “overwhelming.” He has been touched by the “community of care” surrounding cancer patients, which includes specialists, nurses, researchers, and volunteers who tirelessly work to save and improve lives.
In his message, he expressed concern over the fact that at least 9 million people in the UK are not up to date with their cancer screenings, which he described as “missed opportunities for early diagnosis.” He cited statistics showing that for bowel cancer identified at the earliest stage, approximately 90% of individuals survive for at least five years.
While Buckingham Palace has not disclosed the specific type of cancer affecting King Charles, he emphasized the value of early detection and treatment in his own life, expressing hope that his story might encourage others. He remarked, “This milestone is both a personal blessing and a testimony to the remarkable advances that have been made in cancer care in recent years.”
As part of his advocacy, he highlighted the availability of the UK’s new national cancer screening checker, which assists individuals in understanding the cancer screening programs accessible to them. He concluded his message with a call to action, stating, “As we gather to reflect on the year past, I pray that we can each pledge, as part of our resolutions for the year ahead, to play our part in helping to catch cancer early.”
The King and Queen Camilla have been active in raising awareness around cancer. Earlier in 2023, they hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace where Charles spoke about his diagnosis and treatment, thanking healthcare professionals for their dedication to early diagnosis and cancer care. By sharing his journey, King Charles III aims to inspire others to prioritize their health and engage in regular screenings.
