Kidney Donation Deepens Family Ties for Backlund Family in Mitchell

Dan Backlund of Mitchell has a renewed zest for life after receiving a kidney transplant from his nephew, Doug Backlund. This remarkable act of generosity has not only restored Dan’s health but also strengthened the bond between the two family members. “You want to give me a Christmas present, give me garlic-filled olives,” Dan joked, reflecting on the lighter moments surrounding his health journey.

Journey to Kidney Donation

At 71 years old, Dan was on the brink of requiring dialysis before his successful kidney transplant surgery in April 2024. Doug, 41, decided to step in when he learned of his uncle’s medical needs. The journey began with a phone call where Doug expressed his willingness to donate a kidney. Dan initially responded with disbelief, asking, “Why in the hell would you give me a kidney?” Doug replied simply, “Because you’re my uncle and you need one.”

After extensive testing, which included video consultations with medical professionals at the Mayo Clinic and on-site evaluations in spring 2023, Doug learned he was a compatible donor in September 2023. “The likelihood for Dan and I to become a match was extremely small,” he noted. “It was like winning the lottery.” Despite initial plans for surgery in February 2024, complications in Dan’s blood work necessitated a postponement, adding emotional strain to the process.

A Shared Experience

Both Dan and Doug spoke about their experiences with organ donation during a recent meeting of the Mitchell Lions Club. They recounted how they navigated the ups and downs of the medical journey together. Dan’s health has improved significantly since the transplant, and he now jokes about his newfound appetite for green olives, a craving he has had since childhood.

Doug’s motivation for the donation stemmed from a deep familial connection. “He fully understands how appreciative I am,” Dan said. “What do you do for a person that gives you a kidney? There’s not really much you can do.” Dan emphasized that the gift allows him to spend more time with his four grandchildren, deepening the significance of their bond.

Each year, over 25,000 kidney transplant surgeries occur in the United States, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing. Despite this, approximately 90,000 people remain on the waiting list. The Backlunds’ story highlights the critical need for organ donors and the profound impact that a single decision can have on a family.

Dan and Doug’s journey showcases the power of family and the lengths loved ones will go to support each other in times of need. As Dan continues to thrive post-surgery, he remains grateful for Doug’s selfless decision. “He told me it was a gift he wanted to give,” Dan reflected, emphasizing the love and connection that transcends the medical procedure.
