Beloved Community Member Carolyn Hacker Passes Away at 87

Carolyn Mailliard Hacker, a cherished resident of San Rafael, California, passed away on November 21, 2025, at the age of 87 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Her family announced her death, highlighting her significant contributions to both her family and the community throughout her life.

Born in San Francisco in 1938, Carolyn was the eldest daughter of J.W. Mailliard and Margaret Field. She was also the eldest granddaughter of prominent local figures, Ward and Kate Mailliard. Growing up in a family with deep connections throughout the Bay Area, Carolyn formed lasting ties to several locations, including San Geronimo, Cotati, Yorkville, and San Francisco.

During her early years, Carolyn traveled extensively due to her father’s service in the United States Army. After World War II, the family returned to San Francisco, where she received her education at KD Burke School, Katherine Branson Girls School, and later Connecticut College for Women. In 1963, she settled in San Rafael, a city that would be her home for over six decades.

Carolyn’s passion for gardening was a defining aspect of her life. She took immense pride in her plants, which garnered her numerous awards at the Marin County Fair. In addition to gardening, she found joy in knitting and was deeply dedicated to genealogy, dedicating countless hours to researching her family’s history for future generations.

Her commitment to community service shone brightly during her time as a volunteer in the Miller Creek Elementary School District and the San Rafael City Schools District from 1972 to 1980. Carolyn’s belief in supporting education and giving back to her community was evident in her active participation.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, Paul, her children, Barbara (Greg) and Lyn (Don), her grandchildren, Andrew (Katy), Chris, Emily (Mike), Amanda, and KevinJocelyn. She is also remembered fondly by her sisters, Kathy and Margot, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life is planned in honor of Carolyn’s birthday and Mother’s Day in May 2026. In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations be made to the San Rafael Public Library Foundation or the Marin Humane Society, organizations that align with her values and community spirit.
