A new pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Austin, known as the wishbone bridge, is nearing completion and is set to enhance access for runners, walkers, and cyclists. Positioned over Lady Bird Lake near Longhorn Dam, this project has been under construction for two years and is expected to open by the end of the year.
The City of Austin’s Capital Delivery Services Department has reported that the finishing touches are being applied, including landscaping, lighting, and additional amenities. A public celebration is planned for early January 2026 to mark the opening of the bridge. According to Genest Landry, Assistant Director with Austin Capital Delivery Services, “There’s going to be some cleanup that needs to happen,” as the final preparations are underway.
Once operational, the bridge will offer visitors a shaded plaza featuring plants, benches, and stunning views of both sunrise and sunset. Safety has been a significant focus for the project, with the bridge providing a safe passage across Lady Bird Lake. The design ensures that pedestrians and cyclists are completely separated from traffic, thereby enhancing safety for all users.
The project also includes a vital tunnel that runs beneath Pleasant Valley Road, which aims to prevent pedestrians from having to navigate through heavy traffic. This new tunnel is designed to handle flooding events, addressing concerns that arose from the previous structure, which measured just seven feet tall and five feet wide and often suffered from inadequate lighting and frequent flooding issues.
Landry noted the community’s involvement in the tunnel’s design, stating, “There’s going to be a mosaic mural along the walls of the underpass. It’s a great piece of community artwork.” Local children and residents contributed to the mural by tracing their handprints, which will be displayed at the tunnel’s entrance.
The funding for this ambitious project comes from the 2020 Mobility Bond, with a total budget of approximately $22 million. The wishbone bridge represents a significant investment in Austin’s infrastructure, aiming to improve connectivity and promote a healthier lifestyle through enhanced access to recreational spaces along Lady Bird Lake.
As the project approaches completion, the anticipation among local residents continues to grow, signaling a new chapter for outdoor activities in Austin.
