Timothée Chalamet Trains for Six Years to Embrace “Marty Supreme”

Timothée Chalamet has revealed that he dedicated six years to training with a table tennis coach for his role in the upcoming film “Marty Supreme.” The 29-year-old actor, who takes on the character of Marty Mauser, a passionate young man striving to become a champion table tennis player, opened up about his commitment during a recent interview with George Stephanopoulos on “Good Morning America.”

Chalamet expressed a deep connection with his character, highlighting the intense drive that Marty possesses. “He has a huge dream. And when you have a big dream in life, and you don’t really have anyone supporting you when you’re young, you’re your best supporter,” he stated. The actor emphasized the dual nature of such ambition, noting, “That comes with all the positive qualities of self-belief and all the negative qualities that border on selfish.”

In discussing his personal journey, Chalamet reflected on the similarities between his life and Marty’s. “A significant part of who I was in my early 20s or late teens was deeply motivated to have an acting career,” he said. He believes the film portrays the idea that pursuing a singular dream can be both personal and communal. He added, “If you get your butt in the seat … the ride is worth it.”

In a pivotal scene, Gwyneth Paltrow’s character, Kay Stone, challenges Marty with a critical question: “What do you plan to do if this little dream of yours doesn’t work out?” Chalamet revealed that this line resonates with him, as his own family had urged him to consider alternative plans early in his career. “At 29 years old, I can look back and go, ‘That was actually great advice,'” he noted, acknowledging the guidance he received from loved ones.

The actor’s dedication to his craft extended beyond the physical training. He praised the performance of Kevin O’Leary, best known as a judge on “Shark Tank,” who made his acting debut in “Marty Supreme” as Paltrow’s onscreen husband. “He was fantastic in the movie,” Chalamet remarked, praising O’Leary’s confidence and ease in front of the camera. “Kevin had none of that tension or anxiety. I mean, Kevin was all swagger.”

Chalamet’s experience working alongside Paltrow, an established figure in the industry, left him feeling inspired. “I would act opposite her and I’d go, ‘Wow. She’s really incredible,'” he said, indicating his admiration for her talent.

The promotional campaign for “Marty Supreme” has been unique, featuring an orange ping-pong ball blimp and limited-edition merchandise. When discussing the innovative marketing strategies, Chalamet stated, “I can’t lie to you, the principal part is … a feeling of authorship.” He expressed his desire for the film to succeed, saying, “The real truth is that ‘Marty Supreme,’ I feel confident to the degree that by next summer … I’m confident I know what it’s gonna be by next summer.”

Chalamet’s commitment to his role and the film’s message of ambition and perseverance promises to resonate with audiences when “Marty Supreme” is released. The film is set to premiere on December 8, 2025, under the banner of A24, and features a talented cast that includes Odessa A’zion and Josh Safdie. As the press tour continues, Chalamet remains hopeful that the film will inspire viewers to dream big and pursue their passions.
