“Sherlock Holmes: The Great Detective” has officially premiered at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, captivating audiences with a fresh series of action-packed adventures. The production, which runs until February 15, 2024, takes viewers on a thrilling journey from Switzerland to London, France, and Luxembourg.
The play features a distinctive blend of comedy and excitement, as highlighted by actor Harry Smith, who portrays the iconic detective. “The style is very madcap and there’s tons of comedy,” Smith explains, emphasizing the dynamic nature of the performance. He also notes that Sherlock Holmes embodies multiple roles throughout the play, showcasing his skills as a master of disguise.
The narrative is crafted by Bill Van Horn, who not only directs but also plays Dr. Watson, Holmes’ loyal companion. Van Horn states that his focus as a writer is on the evolving relationship between Watson and Holmes as they navigate life’s challenges. “Dr. Watson is there for Holmes to lean on,” he remarks, while also acknowledging that the detective often comes to Watson’s rescue.
The world premiere adapts elements from two stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The first act delves into Holmes’ “demise,” while the second act sees his return to join forces with Watson once again in their fight against crime. Van Horn reflects, “The heart of the show, I think, is friendship.”
The production features a talented cast of six actors, including Mary Martello, who portrays Mrs. Hudson, Holmes’ steadfast landlady at 221B Baker Street. Martello describes her character as fearless, adding depth to the story. She also takes on the role of Colonel Sebastian Moran, a significant antagonist but one who pales in comparison to Holmes’ ultimate nemesis, Moriarty.
Smith elaborates on the character of Moriarty, stating, “He enjoys getting the better of his adversaries.” He believes that capturing Moriarty will ultimately define Holmes’ legacy.
The play promises not only an entertaining experience but also an exploration of enduring themes such as friendship, bravery, and the complexities of human relationships. As audiences prepare for this engaging theatrical journey, Sherlock Holmes: The Great Detective stands out as a notable addition to the Walnut Street Theatre’s 2024 lineup.
