Neal McDonough Hints at Emotional Climax for Cal Thresher in Tulsa King Season 3

Neal McDonough has provided a tantalizing glimpse into what viewers can expect from his character, Cal Thresher, in the upcoming finale of *Tulsa King* Season 3. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, McDonough revealed that the final speech of the season will be an emotional moment for both him and the audience. “Wait until the final speech of Season 3,” the 59-year-old actor stated, expressing that he “got emotional” while filming this pivotal scene.
In the lead-up to the season finale, McDonough discussed the complexities of Cal Thresher, emphasizing that he is “completely misunderstood.” He noted the director’s hesitation about how to portray the character, saying, “I don’t think you can do that, you’re Cal Thresher.” McDonough countered, insisting that this misunderstanding is precisely why he should express deeper emotions.
Cal Thresher’s Journey
Since making his debut in Season 2, McDonough has portrayed Thresher, who initially attempted a foray into the marijuana business but found it unfulfilling. “I tried it. I’m bored. I’m in my 50s. What do I do for fun [because] that didn’t work?” he explained, reflecting on his character’s earlier direction. Now, in Season 3, Cal has shifted gears and is running for governor of Oklahoma—a move that offers him both power and the opportunity to effect change within the state.
“If I run for governor, two things can happen. I can help my great state be even better—but the other half is I can amass a boatload of power for myself,” McDonough outlined. This new trajectory positions Cal at odds with Dwight Manfredi, played by Sylvester Stallone. While Cal is committed to representing Oklahoma, he is also determined to distance himself from the criminal elements associated with Tulsa. “Cal Thresher is fighting for Oklahoma to the bitter end,” he stated.
The dynamic between Cal and Dwight remains tense, with McDonough describing their relationship as two rams butting heads. “We’re talking about each other so much. It makes for great drama,” he said, highlighting the offscreen rivalry that permeates the season.
Strategic Alliances
In the latest episode, viewers witnessed Cal attending the launch party for Dwight’s liquor business, although the two characters did not interact directly. “I don’t want any pictures with him or [Frank Grillo’s] Bevilaqua because that could take down my goal of becoming the governor of Oklahoma,” McDonough explained. His character is focused on maintaining a clear separation from Dwight while also keeping tabs on his rival’s movements.
Cal’s strategic maneuvering includes accepting assistance from Margaret, played by Dana Delany, who acts as his campaign manager. McDonough noted that by the end of the season, it becomes evident that their relationship is more about mutual benefit than genuine partnership. “We’re using each other—and she’s using me for her own purposes as well,” he revealed.
New episodes of *Tulsa King* are available on Paramount+ every Sunday, promising to deliver more high-stakes drama as the season progresses. Fans eagerly await the final moments of Season 3, where the true colors of Cal Thresher will finally emerge, leaving viewers with a lasting impression of the character’s journey.
