The Netflix release date for the historical survival thriller, Eden, featuring Jude Law, has been officially announced. The film will be available for streaming on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, following its theatrical release in the United States on August 22, 2025. Eden originally premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 7, 2024 and has since been made available on various premium video on demand (PVOD) platforms, including its release on Prime Video on October 24, 2025.
Despite the star power of Law, the film struggled commercially, grossing only approximately $2.5 million against a production budget of $35 million. This has led to its classification as a box office disappointment. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds a score of 57% from critics and a more favorable audience score of 73%.
Film’s Historical Context and Plot
Set in the 1930s on the remote island of Floreana in the Galápagos Islands, Eden is based on a true story. The narrative follows a group of European settlers, including Marget Wittmer and Allan Hancock, who arrive on the island in search of a new beginning, believing it to be a utopian paradise.
The film depicts the early settlers, Dr. Friedrich Ritter and his wife Dora, as the first European inhabitants of the island. Their tranquil existence is disrupted by the arrival of the Wittmer family, consisting of Heinz, his wife Margret, and their son Harry. Tensions rise when the vain Baroness Eloise Bosquet de Wagner, accompanied by her lovers Robert and Rudolph and her Ecuadorian servant Manuel, attempts to establish a luxurious hotel, creating friction with the island’s original settlers.
Behind the Scenes
Directed by Ron Howard, Eden features a screenplay by Noah Pink, who co-wrote the story with Howard. The film was co-produced by Howard alongside Brian Grazer, Karen Lunder, Patrick Newall, and Stuart Ford. The editing was handled by Matt Villa, with a score composed by renowned musician Hans Zimmer.
The production was a collaborative effort among Imagine Entertainment, AGC Studios, and Library Pictures International. Distribution in theaters was managed by Vertical Entertainment, known for its work on films such as She Came to Me and Your Monster.
In addition to Jude Law, the cast includes notable actors such as Vanessa Kirby, Ana de Armas, Sydney Sweeney, Daniel Brühl, and Felix Kammerer, contributing to the film’s star-studded appeal.
As Eden prepares to make its debut on Netflix, audiences will have the opportunity to explore this ambitious project that, despite its challenges at the box office, offers a unique glimpse into a turbulent chapter of history.
