Ian McKellen and Tramell Tillman Join Johnny Depp in New ‘Christmas Carol’

The classic tale of redemption is set for a fresh retelling as actors Ian McKellen and Tramell Tillman join Johnny Depp in the upcoming film Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. This new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ timeless story will be directed by Ti West and is scheduled for release on November 13, 2026. The film is being produced by Paramount Pictures.

This adaptation features Depp in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, the miserly protagonist who is visited by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Additionally, Andrea Riseborough has also been cast in a supporting role. The script was written by Nathaniel Halpern, while Emma Watts serves as a producer.

New Interpretations of a Classic

The story of Scrooge has undergone numerous adaptations over the years, with its themes of redemption and transformation continuing to resonate with audiences. This new version marks the second adaptation of A Christmas Carol announced in 2023. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. revealed plans for a different adaptation helmed by Robert Eggers, featuring Willem Dafoe as Scrooge. Eggers’ version aims to present a thrilling ghost story set in Dickens’ London, focusing on one man’s supernatural journey to confront his past, present, and future.

While details about McKellen’s role remain undisclosed, sources indicate that Tillman may portray the Ghost of Christmas Present. This casting choice adds an intriguing layer to the film, particularly following Tillman’s recent success. He is recognized for his acclaimed performance in the latest season of Apple TV+’s hit series Severance, which earned him an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

A Star-Studded Cast with Promising Futures

Tillman’s burgeoning career includes work in various high-profile projects. He is currently involved in Sony Pictures‘ upcoming film Spider-Man: Brand New Day, alongside Tom Holland. His recent projects also include Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother from Amazon/MGM and Good Sex directed by Lena Dunham. He even starred alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

For McKellen, this role adds to a distinguished career that includes iconic performances in major franchises such as X-Men and Lord of the Rings. With representation from Independent Talent Group and CAA, McKellen continues to be a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.

As anticipation builds for Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, the combination of seasoned actors and fresh talent promises to deliver a compelling interpretation of Dickens’ beloved story. The film aims to capture the imagination of audiences worldwide, ensuring the legacy of this holiday classic continues to thrive.
