The Built From Crisis Tour officially commenced in Troy on October 1, 2023, with an engaging event that drew together family, friends, educators, and community members to honor local leader Shawn Maldon and the release of his book, Lessons in Leadership, Loyalty & Loss. Despite an initial downpour that threatened to dampen spirits, the weather cleared, allowing attendees to enjoy an afternoon filled with conversation, good food, and heartfelt support.
The event highlighted the importance of community in shaping Maldon’s journey. A dedicated host committee, led by chair Sheila Fayson Jackson, worked tirelessly to ensure the kickoff was a success. Jackson was joined by committee members Tonya Terry, Glenda Kelly, Sheila Deveridge, Brandon McClure, and Makelia “Mz FedUp” Wingard, whose collaborative efforts were evident throughout the day.
Celebrating a Hometown Hero
Several influential educators from Maldon’s past attended the event, underscoring the significant role the Troy community played in his life. Señora Pamela Merkel, who taught Maldon Spanish for four years, expressed pride in his accomplishments and shared her comfort in communicating with him in Spanish, highlighting the respect he has for language and culture.
Dr. Linda Felton Smith, who served as principal during Maldon’s tenure at Charles Henderson High School, praised his character and leadership, expressing pride in his achievements. Coach Mike Hogan and his wife, Debbie Hogan, also reflected on Maldon’s high school years, noting his discipline and work ethic, which they believed would lead him to success.
The event featured a thoughtful interview conducted by Tonya Terry, a former news anchor. Terry guided a conversation with Maldon that delved into the motivations behind his book and the lessons learned during challenging times. Audience members were encouraged to participate, creating an interactive atmosphere that enriched the experience.
Community Connections Extend Beyond Troy
A strong presence from St. Paul AME Church, where Maldon grew up, further emphasized the importance of faith and community in his life. Catherine Jordan spoke on behalf of the church, highlighting the strong foundation built there and the accomplishments Maldon achieved while involved in the church community.
The energy from the Troy event continued on October 3, 2023, when the tour moved to Georgiana. Mayor Nina Jones Bonner welcomed Maldon for a pop-up book signing at Mary Ruth’s Restaurant. The event attracted local residents eager to purchase books, meet the author, and enjoy a sense of fellowship.
For those unable to attend the book signings, copies of Lessons in Leadership, Loyalty & Loss remain available for purchase online through www.ShawnMaldonBooks.com and on Amazon, ensuring that his inspiring story reaches a wider audience.
