Americans Eligible for Up to $75,000 After Data Breach Settlement

Individuals affected by a significant data breach involving Watson Clinic, a healthcare provider based in Florida, can claim compensation totaling up to $75,000 as part of a $10 million settlement. The breach, discovered in February 2024, compromised sensitive patient information, including Social Security numbers. Allegations against Watson Clinic suggested that inadequate cybersecurity measures contributed to the data leak. Although the clinic has not admitted to any wrongdoing, it agreed to the settlement to avoid further litigation.

Compensation Breakdown for Affected Individuals

The settlement allocates different compensation amounts based on the type of personal information that was exposed. Class members who had images of their full faces and sensitive areas published on the dark web can claim up to $75,000. Others who had their faces partially exposed, along with sensitive areas, may receive $40,000. Those whose sensitive areas but not their faces were leaked can claim $10,000.

Additionally, claimants whose face was exposed with partial clothing of sensitive areas can also receive $10,000. For those whose partial face and partially clothed sensitive areas were published, the compensation is $7,500. Individuals whose non-sensitive areas appeared on the dark web may receive $100.

All class members are eligible for up to $500 for ordinary out-of-pocket losses, which include expenses such as credit monitoring and communication charges. Extraordinary losses can amount to $6,500, factoring in up to five hours of lost time at a rate of $25 per hour. If there are remaining funds in the settlement pool, residual payments of up to $50 may also be distributed.

Claim Process and Deadlines

To receive compensation, affected individuals must submit a claim form by February 5, 2026. Those who were automatically included in the class pool have until January 6, 2026 to opt out. Following a final approval hearing set for March 9, 2026, payments will be distributed to eligible claimants.

Eligible individuals can submit their claims through the designated online link provided by the settlement administrators. Notifications have been sent to those affected, ensuring they are aware of their rights and the compensation available to them.

This settlement underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures in protecting sensitive personal information, as well as the potential financial ramifications for organizations that fail to safeguard such data. As technology continues to evolve, maintaining the security of patient information remains a critical concern for healthcare providers and their clients alike.
