Greeley Turkey Trot Breaks Record with Over 3,000 Registrations

UPDATE: The 28th annual Greeley Turkey Trot just shattered its registration record, drawing over 3,000 participants on Thanksgiving Day. This community-driven event, aimed at supporting cardiac and pulmonary patients at the CardioVascular Institute of North Colorado, underscores the spirit of giving during the holiday season.

More than 3,007 runners signed up for the event this year, marking a significant increase from previous years. Allison Miller, development program director for the Weld Legacy Foundation, attributed this record turnout to the “amazing community” that rallies behind the cause. “It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without the Turkey Trot,” she stated.

The event featured a 2-kilometer walk, known as the gobbler trek, and a 5K run. Race officials confirmed that 2,205 runners completed the 5K while 370 participants finished the 2K walk. The funds raised will provide essential scholarships for patients undergoing rehabilitation after cardiac events, making a real difference in their recovery process.

Race director Heather Schminke, with over 23 years of experience, noted the importance of keeping registration fees accessible to encourage family participation. “We’re glad to see more participants. This continues to be a family event,” Schminke remarked.

Among the competitive runners was Matthew Hayden, a 17-year-old high school athlete who finished fifth overall with a personal record of 15 minutes, 40 seconds. “Dude, it was awesome,” he said, sharing his excitement and the camaraderie of running alongside friends.

Families also embraced the tradition, such as Deb Duggan from Grover, who participated with her husband and children. “We look forward to it every year. It’s becoming a family tradition,” she expressed, highlighting the event’s emotional significance and community involvement.

The Greeley Turkey Trot not only promotes fitness but also strengthens community ties, as almost everyone knows someone impacted by heart disease. As the event wrapped up, the positive energy and shared purpose left participants eagerly anticipating next year’s trot.

As the holiday season progresses, the Greeley Turkey Trot stands out as an inspiring example of unity, health, and giving back to the community. Stay tuned for more updates on local events and initiatives making a difference this Thanksgiving.
