Woman Bitten by Rabid Fox in Chatham County, Urgent Warning Issued

URGENT UPDATE: A woman was bitten by a fox that tested positive for rabies in Pittsboro, North Carolina, prompting immediate warnings from local authorities. The incident occurred Tuesday near U.S. Highway 64, close to the Haw River, leaving residents on high alert.

According to a news release from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was treated and released from a local hospital. The fox, which had been hiding under her car, was euthanized and subsequently tested positive for rabies at the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health.

Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson emphasized the importance of vigilance, stating, “Encounters like this are rare, but they remind us why rabies prevention is so important.” Residents are urged to take precautions to safeguard themselves and their pets against rabid animals.

The Chatham County Public Health Department is actively collaborating with the sheriff’s office to provide guidance to the community. Public Health Director Mike Zelek warned, “Rabies is a deadly disease if medical treatment does not start before the first symptoms appear.” He advised anyone who suspects exposure to seek immediate medical care.

Health officials are also reminding the public to watch for flu-like symptoms that may escalate to confusion, hallucinations, or other neurological effects. In recent years, multiple wild animals in Chatham County have tested positive for rabies, underscoring the ongoing risk.

Residents who have encountered wild animals are strongly encouraged to contact Chatham County Animal Resources at 919-542-7203 or the Chatham County Public Health Department at 919-742-5641.
