Tennessee Softball Stars Pickens, Mardjetko, Leach Earn Top SEC Honors

Tennessee Softball Trio Earns First-Team All-SEC Honors as NCAA Tournament Looms

Tennessee’s standout pitchers and breakout hitter have secured First-Team All-SEC honors, delivering stellar performances that propelled the Lady Vols toward a historic season and an NCAA tournament start this Friday, May 15.

The Big Orange’s Karlyn Pickens, Sage Mardjetko, and Alannah Leach each earned top conference recognition in an announcement that solidifies their role as key players to watch nationwide. This trio’s dominant play helped Tennessee open the season with a remarkable 26-game winning streak and reach a final record of 42-10, positioning the team as a serious contender in postseason play.

Pickens Anchors Tennessee’s Elite Pitching Staff

Senior Karlyn Pickens once again proved why she stands as one of the SEC’s premier pitchers. This is Pickens’ third First-Team All-SEC selection and fourth overall conference honor, capping a season with a 13-7 record and a 1.52 ERA across 115.1 innings over 28 games. Impressively, she racked up 157 strikeouts and five saves, while posting a defensive fielding percentage of .971.

Despite battling injury setbacks, Pickens maintained her dominance with a sub-2.00 ERA for the third straight season. She led a pitching staff that recorded the best ERA in SEC play at just 1.33, a testament to her consistency and poise under pressure.

Mardjetko Breaks Out Despite Injury, Rising Nationally

Junior Sage Mardjetko overcame a challenging hip injury and offseason surgery to post career-best numbers that earned her First-Team honors for the first time. She pitched to a stunning 0.96 ERA, 150 strikeouts, and seven complete games, ranking her second in the nation for individual ERA, just behind Belmont’s Maya Johnson.

Mardjetko’s season highlight was a gritty one-hit shutout against Alabama, delivered immediately after a crushing 12-0 loss, which helped reverse momentum in a critical SEC series late in the year. Often the series opener, Mardjetko set the tone for the Lady Vols’ pitching rotation, with Pickens typically following her on the mound.

In addition to her athletic feats, Mardjetko was named SEC Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year just before Tennessee’s conference tournament game against Ole Miss.

Leach Emerges as Powerful Offensive Force

Joining Pickens and Mardjetko is junior infielder Alannah Leach, who shattered expectations by becoming a consistent starter after beginning the season in a platoon role. Leach smashed career highs with 12 home runs, 23 RBIs, a .330 batting average, and a .718 slugging percentage, making her integral to Tennessee’s high-powered offense.

The Texas native’s sudden offensive surge provided key scoring punch and helped Tennessee sustain its long winning streak early in the season, highlighting her rapid development into an SEC star.

Lady Vols Set Sights on NCAA Tournament

The combined efforts of Pickens, Mardjetko, and Leach have positioned Tennessee as a top contender entering the NCAA softball tournament starting May 15. Their performances this season underscore the Lady Vols’ potential to make a deep postseason run and capture national attention.

With a powerful pitching rotation led by two All-SEC aces and a breakout batter delivering clutch hits, Tennessee is poised to carry momentum from its record-best 26-game win streak into tournament play, sparking excitement among fans and analysts alike.

Montana and U.S. audiences can expect thrilling action as this dynamic trio battles through postseason challenges on the national stage, embodying the spirit of resilience and excellence defining college softball today.
