In South Lake Tahoe, the community-based robotics team, GigaBite Robotics, is reaching out for donations to enhance science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) opportunities for local students. The team, comprised of 11 middle and high school members, is actively involved in mentoring and educational outreach, aiming to inspire the next generation of innovators.
This year, GigaBite Robotics has made significant strides in engaging young learners in STEM, notably by mentoring a rookie team in the FIRST Lego League (FLL). This team received the Rising Stars Award and successfully competed at the Northern Nevada Championship. Additionally, GigaBite Robotics has organized STEM camps, workshops, and community events to introduce students to vital fields such as robotics, engineering, and coding.
Expanding Community Impact
Entering its fifth year in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), GigaBite Robotics is dedicated to providing hands-on experiences that foster real-world engineering skills, teamwork, and problem-solving. The current season, aptly named “Decode,” challenges the team to refine their work through data-driven design and advanced mechanisms, integrating both software and hardware.
The team’s impact extends beyond competition. They actively mentor younger teams and support FTC teams throughout Nevada and internationally. Their community involvement includes volunteering at FTC and FLL competitions and hosting a local scrimmage. Collaborations with local schools and Lake Tahoe Community College have also led to the successful hosting of the STEM Discovery Night, reaching a wide audience.
Over the past three summers, GigaBite Robotics has taught more than 500 students through hands-on STEM camps and outreach programs. The team’s efforts aim to ensure that cost does not become a barrier for students interested in exploring STEM fields.
Funding Future Innovations
To sustain their programs and initiatives, GigaBite Robotics is seeking community support through donations. Contributions will directly fund necessary resources such as robot parts, 3D printing filament, registration and competition fees, tools, travel expenses, and outreach programs.
By ensuring these resources are available, GigaBite Robotics aims to create an inclusive environment where all interested students can participate in STEM education. Donations can be made through their official page: Support GigaBite Robotics.
The team operates under the fiscal sponsorship of Hack Club, a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the registered EIN 81-2908499. Support from the community will not only help inspire curiosity among students but also build their confidence and contribute to a stronger STEM future in South Lake Tahoe.
The continued investment in local students and innovation is crucial for fostering a vibrant community dedicated to education and technological advancement.
