Born on January 14, 1934, in Santa Cruz, Jack was the son of Swedish immigrants Melvin and Bertha Samuelson. His lifelong connection to the community began at the “Old Dominican” hospital, where he entered the world just blocks from his childhood home on Ocean View Avenue.
Jack’s journey included service in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Puerto Rico, and later, a successful 35-year career at Lockheed Missiles & Space. His professional life was complemented by a vibrant personal life, including marriage to his high school sweetheart, Sallie Johnstone, and later to Beverly Firestone, with whom he shared many adventures.
Golf was Jack’s enduring passion. He caddied at the prestigious Pasatiempo Golf Course and became a local legend at Delaveaga, where he competed in tournaments and served on their advisory board. Jack shared his love of the game with his grandsons, teaching them the intricacies of golf at family gatherings.
Beyond golf, Jack embraced life with thrilling pursuits like racecar driving at Laguna Seca and diving for abalone off the California coast. His adventurous spirit was matched by a deep love for family, as he introduced his children to culinary delights from the sea, often preparing homemade clam chowder.
Jack was a dedicated community member, actively involved with the Santa Cruz Elks and Native Sons. His commitment extended to volunteering for the Santa Cruz Civil Service Commission and coaching Little League, where he was a proud presence for his grandsons.
Survived by two children, Julie Walls and Mark Samuelson, along with stepchildren and grandchildren, Jack leaves behind a legacy of kindness and generosity. His family remembers him as a dedicated father and grandfather who took a genuine interest in their lives.
In his final months, Jack received compassionate care from a dedicated team, including his primary physician, Dr. Chris Bernardi, and the staff at Hospice of Santa Cruz County. The family requests donations in his memory to Hospice of Santa Cruz County.
A private celebration of Jack’s life is set for Spring 2026. He will be remembered not only as a cherished family member but also as an iconic figure in the Santa Cruz community, where his impact will be felt for years to come.
