Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks Split Rivalry Matchup with BGM

The Colfax-Mingo girls and boys basketball teams faced off against conference rival BGM in a doubleheader on December 22, 2023, with mixed results. The girls’ team secured a narrow victory, while the boys’ team suffered a defeat.

Girls Team Edges Out BGM in Close Contest

In a tense matchup, the Colfax-Mingo girls basketball team triumphed over BGM with a score of 42-38. The victory marked the Tigerhawks’ third consecutive win as they entered the holiday break, improving their record to 2-3 in South Iowa Cedar League (SICL) play and 4-4 overall.

Strong performances came from several players, with Isabelle Foglesong leading the charge with 15 points, two rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Mickey Bucklin contributed 10 points and three rebounds, while Mallory Sipma achieved a career-high 11 rebounds alongside her four points. Lydia Hansen added six points and six rebounds to the effort.

The game started with the Tigerhawks leading 12-10 at the end of the first quarter and extending their lead to 24-17 by halftime. However, BGM mounted a comeback, taking a two-point lead after three quarters. The Tigerhawks regained their edge in the final period, outscoring BGM 12-4 to clinch the win. Despite turning the ball over 23 times, Colfax-Mingo shot 35 percent from the floor and converted 9 of 11 free throws.

BGM fell to a record of 4-4 for the season and 2-4 in conference play, struggling to contain the Tigerhawks in the crucial final moments of the game.

Boys Team Falls Short Against BGM Bears

In the boys’ matchup, the Colfax-Mingo team was unable to overcome a strong performance from BGM, resulting in a 61-49 loss. This defeat left the Tigerhawks with a 1-4 record in conference play and 1-7 overall.

Despite the team’s struggles, Wyatt Jay turned in a standout performance, scoring a career-high 21 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Chase Trotter added eight points and five rebounds, while several other players contributed to the effort: Izaiah Lewis, Wyatt Thornton, and Alex Teed each scored four points.

Colfax-Mingo shot 45.7 percent from the field and made 5 of 6 free throws, but their 18 turnovers proved detrimental. BGM, now with a record of 2-5 and 2-4 in SICL play, shot 46.7 percent overall and capitalized on free throws, hitting 14 of 18 attempts.

Notably, Beau Burns led BGM with 20 points, while Maddox Rhoads contributed 12 points. The Tigerhawks will look to regroup as they prepare for their next games following the holiday break.
