UPDATE: In a thrilling day of high school basketball, Staten Island teams showcased their talent at the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood, NJ, with St. Joseph by-the-Sea and Moore securing vital wins, while Monsignor Farrell faced a tough defeat in Daytona, FL.
Just moments ago, St. Joseph by-the-Sea edged out St. Michael Catholic 47-45, thanks to a stellar performance by Nick Rebracca, who scored a game-high 27 points. This win improves their record to 1-1 in the ongoing Boardwalk Classic. Rebracca demonstrated his scoring versatility, netting points consistently throughout the game, including a perfect 7 for 7 from the free-throw line.
“Nick showed his ability to score in a variety of ways today in a much-needed win for us,” praised Sea head coach Mike Cortese. “His teammates did a great job finding him in different spots on the court.”
In another exciting matchup, Moore triumphed over Abington Friends from Pennsylvania with a score of 60-55. The victory was fueled by the impressive efforts of senior guards Eenej Vinson and Matt Gibbons, each contributing 14 points. Nick DeGrado added another 10 points, helping the Mavs improve to 2-6 overall.
Meanwhile, Monsignor Farrell struggled against Lake Howell, losing 49-35. Despite JJ Yates scoring 16 points, Farrell’s first game in Florida ended their five-game winning streak. Lake Howell’s Isaac Buckley dominated the court with a game-high 23 points as they pulled away in the second half, outscoring Farrell significantly.
In the MSIT Christmas Showcase, MSIT triumphed over CSIM with a final score of 74-68. Ray Guerriero led the Seagulls with a season-high 20 points, including nine crucial points in the fourth quarter. Coach Charlie Donohue commended his team’s resilience, stating, “Tough win against a tough team, who always comes to play.”
Lastly, SIA remained undefeated with a solid 75-67 victory over Petrides. Danny Nowak spearheaded the effort with 19 points, while Gabe Moschella and Luke DeVito contributed 18 and 15 points, respectively. Coach Mike Mazella acknowledged the challenge posed by Petrides but expressed confidence in his team’s performance.
As the Staten Island teams continue in their respective tournaments, all eyes will be on their upcoming games next week, with Moore set to face Pennsbury HS on Tuesday at 1 p.m. and Farrell looking to bounce back against Winter Haven on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m..
