The Sherman Police Department in Texas has introduced an innovative initiative aimed at enhancing the mental wellness of its officers and staff by adopting an emotional support dog named Monte. This one-year-old spaniel mix was welcomed into the department to assist in providing emotional comfort to both officers and victims of crime.
Importance of Officer Wellness
Chief Jason Jeffcoat emphasized the significance of supporting officer wellness, stating, “Our community deserves our officers to be well and taken care of.” He highlighted that mental health is critical for effective policing and community safety. The department is committed to fostering a positive environment for its employees, which includes existing resources such as an on-campus gym and a peer support team.
Monte was adopted from the Sherman Animal Shelter in late July 2023 and has been undergoing training to fulfill his role as an emotional support dog. Although still in training, Monte has already shown a positive influence within the department. One staff member remarked, “You see this little guy roaming our hallways, I don’t know how it couldn’t brighten your day a little bit.”
