Tomlin Confident Metcalf Will Play Against Dolphins Despite Setback

PITTSBURGH – Mike Tomlin, head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, expressed optimism regarding wide receiver DK Metcalf’s potential availability for the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins on December 11, 2023. Metcalf was hospitalized after experiencing stomach issues following the Steelers’ 27-22 victory over the Dolphins last Sunday.

During his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Tomlin stated, “He’s moving in the right direction. I don’t think it’s going to jeopardize his availability at all, but it certainly may jeopardize his availability at the early portions of the week from a practice standpoint.” He highlighted the effectiveness of the medical team in ensuring Metcalf received timely care, saying, “I’m appreciative of our medical staff and how quickly they acted.”

Metcalf, who recorded a season-high 148 yards on seven receptions against Miami, was removed from the team flight by medical personnel after complaining of stomach pains. Following the game, he stayed overnight in a Baltimore hospital before returning to Pittsburgh on Monday. Tomlin explained, “He got hit in the abdomen or stomach in-game. I think they gave him some basic over-the-counter remedies in-game like Pepto or something like that, and it got probably progressively worse after the game.”

Injury Updates for Steelers Players

While Metcalf appears likely to play, the status of several other key players remains uncertain. Three Steelers players—tight end Darnell Washington, offensive tackle Andrus Peat, and linebacker Malik Harrison—are currently in concussion protocol. Additionally, cornerback James Pierre is dealing with a calf injury, and defensive lineman Keeanu Benton has an ankle issue, both of which may limit their participation in practice.

Tomlin also mentioned safety Kyle Dugger, who missed last Sunday’s game due to a hand injury, has “a chance” to return. Furthermore, the availability of first-round draft pick Derrick Harmon, who has been sidelined for the last two games due to a knee injury, will depend on his participation in practice this week.

Given the rising number of injuries and the extra preparation day ahead of Monday Night Football, Tomlin has decided to grant the Steelers an off day on Wednesday. The team will resume practice on Thursday, following a normal Wednesday schedule.

Tomlin elaborated on the decision: “We just deemed it appropriate to give ourselves another additional 24 hours of recovery this week, so that’s why we’ve taken the approach that we’ve taken this week. We’ll give guys some additional time to rest and recuperate and be able to put their hand in the pile.”

As the Steelers (7-6) prepare to face the Dolphins, they will need all their key players healthy to compete against a Miami team that has held opponents to an average of just 13.3 points per game in their last four victories.
