Toho Studios has officially announced the title for the next installment in the Godzilla franchise, revealing that the follow-up to the acclaimed 2023 film, Godzilla Minus One, will be named Godzilla Minus Zero (also styled as Godzilla -0.0). The announcement occurred during the annual “Godzilla Day 2025” event held in Tokyo, where a teaser logo and first-look artwork were also unveiled. Both the logo and artwork feature stark black-and-white brush strokes, reminiscent of the minimalist design approach used in the previous film’s branding.
Director and visual effects supervisor Takashi Yamazaki will return to helm the new film, signaling a commitment to creative continuity. The emblem for Godzilla Minus Zero was co-created by Yamazaki, suggesting an exploration of a darker and more expansive monster mythology.
The previous film, Godzilla Minus One, achieved remarkable success, grossing over $113 million worldwide against a production budget of only $15 million. This made it not only the first film in the 70-year history of the Godzilla franchise to win an Academy Award, taking home the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, but also the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film at the North American box office.
New Film Positioned as a Statement Piece
Insiders report that Godzilla Minus Zero is being positioned not just as a sequel, but as a significant statement piece within the franchise. The film is slated for a global release in late 2026, with production set to commence later this year in New Zealand and Norway. While specific details regarding the cast and storyline remain undisclosed, expectations are high that Toho will elevate both the scale and ambition of the project.
With the success of Godzilla Minus One firmly establishing the franchise in blockbuster territory, Godzilla Minus Zero will mark the 31st Japanese feature in the iconic kaiju series, excluding U.S. co-productions with Legendary Entertainment. As Toho Studios aims to leverage the franchise’s renewed popularity, this upcoming film is anticipated to captivate audiences worldwide, particularly in Western markets.
