Urgent Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Hudson Valley Counties

URGENT UPDATE: A significant winter weather advisory has just been issued for parts of the Hudson Valley and Upstate New York. Residents in Western Ulster County, Eastern Dutchess County, Eastern Columbia County, and Western Greene County should brace for hazardous conditions beginning today at 5 p.m. and lasting until noon on Friday, November 3, 2023.

The National Weather Service warns that this advisory comes as the region prepares for a slippery evening commute. Expect mixed precipitation to develop, with up to 1 inch of snow and sleet forecasted, along with ice accumulations reaching between one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch. The precipitation will start as rain this afternoon, transitioning to a wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow in northern areas.

“Be prepared for slippery roads,” advises the National Weather Service. “If you are going outside, watch your first few steps on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury. Slow down and use caution while traveling.”

This latest advisory follows another winter weather warning earlier this week, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by winter weather in the region. As conditions worsen, residents are urged to remain vigilant and plan for potentially dangerous travel scenarios.

Forecasts indicate that the wintry mix will taper off by Friday morning, but the highest ice amounts—locally around a quarter of an inch—are expected across the southern Adirondacks and the high terrain of western New England.
