URGENT UPDATE: The University of Iowa Retiree Association successfully hosted a vibrant fundraiser, “Music, Meals, and Making a Difference,” on February 15, 2025, at Tavern Blue, aimed at tackling the urgent issue of food insecurity affecting students and staff. This critical event, organized in partnership with the UI Food Pantry Organization, attracted a large crowd and highlighted the increasing need for support within the university community.
With staggering statistics revealing that 61% of graduate students, 21% of undergraduates, and 18% of faculty and staff face food insecurity, the stakes are high. Attendees were treated to live music from the band HomeBrewed, performing beloved classics, which created a lively atmosphere filled with dancing and joy.
Steph Beecher, the basic needs coordinator in the Division of Student Life, emphasized the event’s primary goal: raising awareness rather than simply fundraising. “The main goal of this fundraiser isn’t even to raise money; it’s more about raising awareness around the issue of food insecurity,” Beecher stated.
The event was meticulously planned for six months, showcasing the dedication of volunteers from both the University of Iowa and the Food Pantry. For those unable to attend, a convenient QR code was created, allowing supporters to donate food directly via Amazon, streamlining the support process.
Past president of the UI Retiree Association, Evalyn Van Allen-Shalash, expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming turnout and donations received. “This night has exceeded my expectations,” she said, reflecting on the emotional impact of the evening. The event also received invaluable support from local groups like the Graduate College and the UI Center for Human Rights, showcasing community solidarity.
In a generous move, Tavern Blue pledged to donate 10% of its proceeds from the evening to the Iowa City Food Pantry, amplifying the event’s reach and impact.
The urgency of addressing food insecurity has never been clearer. Beecher’s research reveals alarming trends, pushing the UI Retiree Association and the Iowa City Food Pantry to act decisively. While the total funds raised are still being calculated, the event’s success in raising awareness is undeniable.
With the community rallying around this cause, the UI Retiree Association encourages continued support and engagement. The call to action is clear: food insecurity is a pressing issue that demands our attention and action.
Stay tuned for updates as the final fundraising totals are announced, and continue to engage with the initiatives aimed at supporting our students and staff facing these challenges.
