UPDATE: North Olmsted officials have just announced a crucial charter amendment that will be on the ballot for the upcoming election on November 4. This single amendment, known as Issue 24, aims to enhance the city’s purchasing power by allowing access to additional cooperative purchasing programs.
The North Olmsted Charter Review Commission, which previously recommended four amendments in 2020, spent the year evaluating the city’s charter. Their sole recommendation this time is designed to streamline the procurement process and save taxpayer dollars. Currently, the charter restricts the city to the state bidding process, which has been described as cumbersome and limiting.
“Right now, the charter only allows the city to use the state bidding process,” said North Olmsted Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones. “It’s very time-consuming and really limits our options.”
If passed, Issue 24 will enable North Olmsted to utilize nationally recognized cooperative purchasing programs, such as Sourcewell, which offers hundreds of competitively solicited contracts. Mayor Jones emphasized that these programs have already vetted vendors and pricing, significantly cutting down the time and resources needed for a full-bid process. “This will save us and ultimately the taxpayers’ money because it gives our city access to the best pricing available,” she added.
North Olmsted’s Charter Review Commission, led by chairperson Jeff Sturgeon, expressed confidence in this singular amendment. “After a thorough review of the charter, the commission only saw one issue that needed to be addressed at this time,” Sturgeon stated. “This amendment allows the city to work faster and in a more cost-effective and strategic manner.”
The proposed amendment reflects a growing trend among neighboring Northeast Ohio communities that have already adopted similar cooperative purchasing measures. By allowing broader purchasing options, North Olmsted aims to enhance its operational efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
This charter amendment is set to be a pivotal topic for voters as the election date approaches. Citizens are encouraged to consider the potential benefits of increased efficiency in city spending and operations. The community has an opportunity to shape how their city can better manage resources and serve its residents.
Stay tuned for updates as the election draws near, and be prepared to make your voice heard on this important issue that could reshape North Olmsted’s procurement strategy for years to come.
