Leominster Students Shine in First-Ever Art Exhibit Showcase

UPDATE: Several Leominster High School students showcased their artwork for the first time in a local exhibit, marking a significant milestone for both the students and their teachers. The Sterling Arts Collaborative (SAC) fall show took place on November 8 and 9, 2023, at the historic 1835 Town Hall in downtown Sterling, highlighting the creative talents of local youth and established artists alike.

This groundbreaking event featured the works of students alongside those of their teachers, including Shelly Saben, head of the art department, and Linnea Romhanyi. Saben proudly displayed her painting, while Romhanyi brought her own work to the exhibit. This was not only the first participation from Leominster High School but also the first time Saben had her art displayed publicly.

“The enthusiasm the students feel and the pride they have in their work is such a wonderful thing to experience,” Romhanyi stated. “Seeing their work hung next to other adult artists gives them a sense of accomplishment and shows them that art is a lifelong pursuit.”

Student artists included juniors Lola Couture, Ivan Kaidalin, and Huynh Tran, as well as seniors Sid Imbriani, Kenzie Moyen, Avin Ruiz, Erin Sargent, and Natalie Smith. Sophomore Sophie Lopez from the Leominster Center for Technical Education Innovation (CTEi) also participated, marking a proud moment for the school community.

Saben expressed her excitement, stating, “It was wonderful to showcase our students’ work in the fall. All other exhibitions and art competitions we attend are typically in the spring season.” She emphasized the importance of collaborating with SAC in the future to further expose her students to local opportunities.

The exhibit featured a diverse array of artwork, including photographs and paintings, created by artists ranging from young children to adults over the age of 99. The Sterling Arts Collaborative shared on social media that it was particularly impressive to see the exhibiting artists engaging with attendees, discussing their work, and sharing insights.

This event held special significance for Saben, who noted that her painting, titled “Kids Boots,” was displayed alongside a pastel drawing created by her mother, Joanne Fortin. This emotional connection inspired Saben to pursue her art more seriously after years of focusing on teaching. “Exhibiting my work was never a priority for me. Teaching and mentoring students brought me joy,” she reflected. “It was my mother who encouraged me to showcase my paintings, even taking one off my wall for submission!”

The local community is encouraged to support the arts and stay updated on future events through the Sterling Arts Collaborative’s Facebook page, which showcases photos from the event and provides information on upcoming shows.

As the excitement from this debut exhibit continues, it highlights the importance of community support for young artists and the value of creative expression in education. Expect further developments from the Leominster High School art department as they aim to build on this success.
