URGENT UPDATE: Jeremy Daffern, an esteemed advocacy specialist with the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, will present a vital program titled “Listening Differently” on October 28, 2023, from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Frey Conference Suite, Wayne State College. This event is FREE and open to the public, with doors opening at 5:30 PM and food provided.
Daffern, a Gallaudet University alumnus, aims to foster deeper understanding and empathy for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. “Being deaf or hard of hearing is an experience I can never completely understand,” Daffern stated. He emphasizes the importance of learning from those who navigate a world often designed for hearing individuals. This event seeks to create a shared space where attendees can “walk a while” alongside their neighbors, enhancing community connections.
Alongside American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter Meghann Cassidy, Daffern will share his personal journey of resilience and hope amid the complexities faced by the deaf community. The program will also include facilitated discussions, resources for further learning, and a unique segment where attendees will “listen differently” to members of the Wayne State Department of Music.
This event is sponsored by Wayne State public and global health honors students, the service-learning program, and the Nebraska Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The initiative underscores the pressing need for awareness and inclusion in today’s society.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Engage in transformative conversations that promote understanding and compassion. Attendees will leave equipped with knowledge and resources to support the deaf and hard of hearing community.
