Michael Carpenter, an English-language arts teacher at Jefferson Middle School, has received recognition as the Teacher of the Week for his significant contributions to student education. With eight years of experience at the school in Urbana, Illinois, Carpenter has played a crucial role in enhancing reading skills among students, achieving a ranking in the 70th percentile statewide.
Reflecting on his decision to become a teacher, Carpenter explained his initial aspiration was to teach at the high school level. He stated, “I became a teacher because I thought it would offer me an opportunity to be creative while also giving back to the community I grew up in.” His experience at Jefferson, particularly with eighth-graders, has brought him immense satisfaction. He described his students as “respectful, kind, and curious,” noting their growing awareness of real-world issues as they approach adulthood.
Carpenter’s teaching methods emphasize engagement. He believes that if he demonstrates enthusiasm for the material, students are more likely to connect with it. “If I can express, through my words and actions, a passion for the material I’m teaching, there’s a better chance the students will be into it,” he explained. His favorite lesson revolves around a unit on the Holocaust, which he considers essential for understanding contemporary global issues.
One of Carpenter’s most cherished moments comes from encountering former students outside the classroom. He expressed joy in reconnecting with them, recalling, “Hearing ‘Hey, Mr. Carpenter!’ and getting to catch up with former students who are a few years older and taller than I remembered is always a treat.”
Carpenter’s journey in education has been influenced by several remarkable teachers throughout his own schooling. He highlighted the impact of individuals like Ms. Peete, who encouraged creativity in fifth grade, and Mr. Bechtel, whose positive energy made math enjoyable. He noted, “I’ve modeled bits of my own style from every one of them,” showcasing the collaborative spirit of teaching.
In addition to his role at Jefferson, Carpenter pursues various interests outside the classroom. He is a musician and has been involved in bands since high school. He also hosts a podcast focusing on Illinois basketball and Illinois football, allowing him to engage with his passions while maintaining his teaching career. Furthermore, he teaches a course at the University of Illinois, which he described as a thrilling opportunity and a full-circle moment in his professional journey.
