Savion Glover’s “Chez Joey” Dazzles Audiences at Arena Stage

The jazz musical “Chez Joey,” co-directed by Savion Glover and Tony Goldwyn, has premiered at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., captivating audiences with its vibrant performances and innovative choreography. The production features Awa Sal Secka in the role of Linda English, whose powerful voice and dynamic presence anchor the story, set against the backdrop of a jazz club in Chicago’s historic Bronzeville neighborhood.

This reimagining of the classic 1940 musical “Pal Joey” introduces Linda, a spirited newcomer from South Carolina, who finds herself entangled in a love triangle with the charming club entertainer Joey Evans, played by Myles Frost. Frost, a 2022 Tony Award winner for his portrayal of Michael Jackson in “MJ,” brings a blend of charm and depth to the role originally made famous by Gene Kelly on Broadway and later by Frank Sinatra in the film adaptation. His rendition of “Where or When” stands out, showcasing his energetic performance as he leaps from tabletops to the piano, embodying hope and exuberance.

Glover’s choreography is a standout element, with each tap and stomp serving as musical percussion that elevates the production. The ensemble dances freely, embodying the spirit of a jazz club, where the air is thick with ambition and resilience, reflecting the hopes of characters like Joey, who dreams of a brighter future. The production’s setting at Lucille’s club, still reeling from the Great Depression, adds layers of complexity to the narrative, enhancing the stakes of the characters’ struggles.

The second act delves deeper into Joey’s character, exploring his darker side through a modern dance and tap interlude that portrays his inner turmoil. This nuanced portrayal benefits from a new book by Richard LaGravenese, which balances the show’s lighthearted moments with more serious themes of love and ambition. While the character of Vera Simpson, played by Samantha Massell, is pivotal, some critics note that her role in the love triangle could be more pronounced, as Linda often takes center stage in the emotional tug-of-war.

Costume designer Emilio Sosa deserves recognition for the visually stunning wardrobe that not only fits the period but also enhances the characters’ personalities. Linda’s standout moment in a striking dress exemplifies the production’s attention to detail.

The musical score, supervised by Victor Gould, incorporates adventurous arrangements that reflect the evolving jazz sound, blending modern improvisation with classic standards. The onstage band, led by pianist Lafayette Harris, Jr., delivers a lively performance that resonates with the audience, offering a mix of traditional melodies and contemporary jazz influences.

“Chez Joey” runs through March 15, 2024, at Arena Stage, located at 1101 6th St. SW. Tickets range from $83 to $143, with discounts available for certain audiences.
