Sarah Williams, a resident of Wells, has opened a new photography studio named Studio Onyx in January 2023. The studio, located on the second floor of the recently renovated The Broadway building, is designed not only for her own photography business but also to serve as a creative space for other photographers and content creators.
Williams, who established her photography business, Sarah Marschall Photo, in 2020, offers a range of services including wedding photography, senior portraits, and lifestyle shoots. She expressed that having her own studio had always been part of her long-term vision. Prior to this venture, she faced challenges finding suitable studio spaces available for her use. The opportunity to open Studio Onyx arose when she learned about the available space in The Broadway. She remarked, “I’ve always thought it was stunning,” highlighting her admiration for the building’s architecture.
The location at 201 S. Broadway Ave. in downtown Albert Lea appealed to Williams, who noted its convenience and vibrant atmosphere. Her decision to move forward was influenced by a visit to a newly opened restaurant, Cento, where she discovered the potential for studio rentals in the upper floors.
Williams faced some difficulties in furnishing and decorating the studio before its opening. “I love the idea of design, and so like what colours and textures… the vibe to be in here,” she said. She aimed to create a space that would not only reflect her design sensibilities but also serve as a versatile backdrop for various photography needs. The final aesthetic features a clean and neutral palette, which has proven effective for both her own projects and those of other creatives.
The reception from the public has been overwhelmingly positive. Currently, Williams’ primary focus is to increase awareness about Studio Onyx and its availability for rental. The studio can be booked for hourly sessions, and interested individuals can reserve the space through her website, sarahmarschallphoto.com/studio-onyx. This online platform facilitates bookings, payments, and contract arrangements.
When not engaged in photography or managing Studio Onyx, Williams resides in Wells with her husband and two children. As she looks to the future, she is excited about the potential collaborations and creative projects that will unfold in her new studio space.
