Leslie Walker Resigns as Interim Principal of Cherry Hill East

On February 24, 2025, Cherry Hill Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kwame Morton Sr. announced the resignation of Mrs. Leslie Walker from her role as interim principal of Cherry Hill High School East. Walker’s resignation is effective February 27, 2025, marking the end of her tenure in a position she described as “one of the greatest honors of [her] career.”

In her formal letter of resignation, Walker expressed that the decision to step down was particularly challenging. The impetus for her choice arose during a stressful period when she learned of her son’s illness. “It’s stressful… and he needs his mom,” Walker stated, emphasizing her desire to maintain a positive outlook for her family, which includes her son, who is 40 years old, along with his wife and child.

Dr. Neil Burti, currently serving as the district’s director of secondary education, will step in as acting principal for the remainder of the 2025-26 school year. Walker expressed confidence in Burti’s leadership, highlighting his experience and dedication to the school community.

Reflecting on her time at East, Walker shared a deep sense of gratitude towards the school’s assistant principals and teachers. She underscored the significance of a principal’s visibility and presence in the lives of students. “I love this job… I will go to my grave knowing I do it well,” she remarked. However, Walker acknowledged that personal matters have made it increasingly difficult for her to fulfill the responsibilities of her position.

“I thought of all the stressors in my life, and this is the one I can relieve myself of right now, even though it’s actually the one that gave me the most joy,” she added. Her commitment to her role had driven her to arrive at school early each day, but ultimately, she recognized that stepping back was necessary for her well-being.

As she prepares to leave, Walker conveyed her appreciation for the support she received from the Cherry Hill East community. “Thank you for being wonderful [and] treating [me] very well,” she said. In her farewell message to students, Walker encouraged them to “be kind – to be friends with each other,” a sentiment that reflects her dedication to fostering a positive school environment.

The transition of leadership comes at a time when the school community is navigating its own challenges. With Dr. Burti stepping into the acting principal role, there is optimism that the school will continue to thrive under his guidance. Walker’s departure marks the end of an era, but her influence and commitment to the students will undoubtedly resonate within the halls of Cherry Hill High School East for years to come.
