Community Unites at Mountain State Creamery for Telethon Kickoff

Mountain State Creamery in Vienna, West Virginia, recently launched a 30-day kickoff party for the upcoming WTAP Wood County Society Telethon. This event brought together community members, local celebrities, and a popular band, all aiming to raise funds for a nonprofit that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental differences across 12 counties.

On Sunday, the ice cream shop transformed into a hub of activity as celebrity scoopers, including Vienna Mayor Chad Emrick and members of the local metal band Truckstop, participated by scooping ice cream for visitors. All tips and proceeds generated during the event went directly to the Wood County Society, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families from the age of three through life.

Victoria West, owner of Mountain State Creamery and the event’s coordinator, explained that the idea originated from her experience as a telethon volunteer. “As a volunteer for Wood County Society, I thought, why don’t we pick up our packets at our Mountain State Creamery and do a give back?” she said. The response from the community exceeded her expectations. “We couldn’t be happier with the turnout that we’ve had so far,” she added.

The Wood County Society plays a crucial role in the region, helping individuals with unique needs. Representatives Bailey Harlon and Linda Lawson emphasized that the event served not just as a fundraiser but also as a means to connect with the community. Lawson noted, “There’s still a lot of unknowns, and you hear about Wood County, you think it’s only Wood County. Being able to share that with the community is what it’s all about.”

Throughout the day, the crowd grew increasingly lively, with Lawson reporting, “It’s been wonderful… we’re running out of tables and chairs, and I think that’s a good problem to have.” This enthusiasm underscores the significance of the telethon for the organization’s ongoing operations, as Lawson explained, “Without telethon, we can’t run.”

Celebrity scooper Jason Cottrelle shared his personal connection to the cause. “I didn’t really know what Wood County Society was until she just explained to me this morning. It’s to help people with special needs, children with special needs. And that really hit close to my heart because I’ve got a son that’s autistic,” he recounted.

The band Truckstop, consisting of Justin Ewing, Austin Erb, Dylan Hibbard, and Jerry Larue Jr., also joined in the festivities. “It’s all going to a good cause, non-profit organizations,” said Erb, encouraging others to come and support the cause.

Other notable celebrity scoopers included Jen from Sips Coffee Truck, Layken from Texas Roadhouse, local chiropractor Doc Johnson, and Mayor Emrick, all contributing to the event’s success.

As the telethon approaches, the excitement in the community is palpable. The kickoff at Mountain State Creamery not only highlighted the importance of the upcoming event but also reinforced the community’s commitment to supporting the Wood County Society and the individuals it serves.
