Ellinwood High School (EHS) is showcasing its students through a new initiative led by Student Library Assistant Madison Dombroski. Each week, Dombroski will highlight different seniors in the “Check It Out” column, providing a platform for their achievements and aspirations. This week, the spotlight is on Phillip Penner and Adam Hayes, both of whom are preparing to graduate and embark on their future pathways.
Phillip Penner has a supportive family, including his mother Kelli Penner and father Christopher Stromski. A standout feature of Phillip’s journey is his recommendation of the book, the Bible, which he credits with changing his life. He believes it has the potential to transform others’ lives as well. Phillip’s favorite quote, “Giving up on your goals because of one setback is like slashing all four of your tires because one is flat,” attributed to Dolamar Cross, reflects his resilient mindset.
Phillip emphasizes that family can extend beyond blood relations. He advises incoming students to focus on their own paths and not be swayed by the opinions of others. Looking ahead, Phillip plans to pursue education at a trade school, aiming to become a certified electrician with hopes of starting his own business one day. His positive outlook sets a motivating example for his peers.
In this edition of the spotlight, Adam Hayes also shares his story. Adam comes from a large family, with parents Glennda French and Jimmy Hayes, along with siblings Jacob, Ethan, Zaid, and Tyler. He has eight nieces and nephews who add joy to his life. Adam recommends the “I Survived” book series, noting their engaging stories and manageable length, making them an enjoyable read for students.
His favorite quote, “I love my mama,” by Bobby Bushay, underscores his close family ties. Among his school experiences, Adam particularly enjoys his plumbing class at Barton Community College, which he describes as his favorite. He encourages incoming students to take as many Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes as possible, recognizing the value these courses add to their education.
Both Phillip and Adam are poised for a successful final year at EHS, and their stories reflect the diverse aspirations and values within the student body. Sheri Holmes, the director of library and media services for the Ellinwood School and Community Libraries, oversees this initiative and can be contacted via email at [email protected] for further inquiries.
Through this spotlight series, EHS aims to foster community and celebrate the achievements of its students as they prepare for graduation and the opportunities ahead.
