The historic battle flag of the 21st Michigan Regiment from the Civil War will be unveiled to the public on April 6, 2024, at the Ionia Armory. The event, organized by VFW Post 12082 of Ionia and VFW Post 4646 of Muir/Lyons, will begin at 1 p.m. and is free for all attendees.
The flag, which has been a powerful symbol of sacrifice and community pride, hung inside the Ionia County Courthouse for an impressive 159 years before its removal for professional restoration in April 2024. The restoration took place in North Carolina, where textile conservators specializing in Civil War artifacts worked to stabilize and preserve the fragile fabric.
Honoring History and Legacy
Crafted by the “Ladies of Ionia,” mothers of soldiers who served in the 21st Michigan Infantry, the flag represents not just a relic but a living testament to the bravery of those who carried it into battle. “This project has always been about more than restoring a historic relic,” said Eric Calley, commander of Post 4646. “It’s about preserving the story of those who carried this flag into battle — honoring their sacrifice and ensuring their legacy continues to inspire future generations.”
The collaborative efforts of local historians, veterans, and community advocates played a crucial role in making the restoration possible. The return of the flag to Ionia serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of those who served and the community that honors their legacy.
A Community Celebration
The unveiling ceremony will include remarks from local veterans, community leaders, and historians, culminating in a formal presentation of the restored flag. “This flag embodies endurance, unity, and the unwavering spirit of those who served,” stated Shane Houghton, quartermaster of Post 12082. “Its return to Ionia is a powerful reminder of the generations who defended our freedom and the community that continues to honor them.”
