UPDATE: Poquoson Islanders delivered a stunning performance in the Class 2 Region A semifinals, overwhelming the Southampton Indians with a decisive 42-6 victory on November 10, 2023, at Poquoson Middle School. The No. 2 Islanders showcased a relentless Wing-T rushing attack that accumulated an impressive 429 yards without a single pass attempt.
This commanding win propels the Islanders (11-1) into a highly anticipated showdown against the top-seeded Armstrong Wildcats (12-0), who narrowly defeated Thomas Jefferson, 20-13, in the other semifinal. Poquoson, champions of the region for the past three years, are eager to continue their winning streak.
Initially, the Indians (7-5) seemed poised to challenge the Islanders with their star quarterback, Zayden Pope, who has thrown for over 2,000 yards this season. Southampton’s offense made an early attempt, with Pope completing five passes for 40 yards and driving into Poquoson territory. However, the Islanders’ defense stepped up, stopping the drive and seizing control of the game.
Poquoson’s first touchdown came swiftly as Austin Conley sprinted 39 yards to score on their opening possession, making it 7-0. Following an interception by Dom Galacgac, the Islanders marched down the field, culminating in a 4-yard touchdown run by Cody Little, extending the lead to 14-0.
The Islanders’ defense continued to shine, limiting Southampton to just 150 total yards. A fumble recovery set up another quick score, with Galacgac dashing 19 yards to make it 21-0 with just over ten minutes remaining in the half.
Southampton managed to break through with a trick play, as receiver Miguel Bradshaw connected with Qmarai Allen for a 35-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 21-6. However, a penalty on the ensuing kickoff allowed Poquoson to capitalize, with Galacgac scoring again on a 21-yard run to increase the lead to 28-6 before halftime.
As the second half began, the Islanders continued their dominance. Conley broke free for a stunning 62-yard touchdown run, and shortly after, he added another score from 5 yards out, pushing the lead to 36 points and triggering a running clock with 7:57 left in the third quarter.
Coach Elliott Duty praised his team’s performance, stating, “I thought we did a good job blocking tonight, everybody.” He highlighted the offensive line and running backs’ contributions to opening crucial holes, while also acknowledging the defense’s ability to limit Southampton’s big plays.
As Poquoson gears up for their next challenge against Armstrong, expect this powerhouse team to bring their A-game as they pursue another regional title. Fans and players alike are eager to see if the Islanders can extend their winning tradition in what promises to be an electrifying matchup. Stay tuned for further updates as this developing story unfolds!
