Urgent Closure of Virginia Capital Trail Begins Dec. 1 for Repairs

UPDATE: Starting as early as December 1, 2025, a significant portion of the Virginia Capital Trail will face a multiweek closure for urgent construction work. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has confirmed plans to close the trail for crucial repairs to the bridge deck between mile markers 3 and 4 along the Jamestown leg of this 52-mile trail.

The closure will affect the section of the trail along John Tyler Highway (Route 5) from just east of Governor’s Landing Road to Heritage Landing Road. The work is projected to take two to three weeks, but timelines may vary due to weather conditions, according to VDOT officials.

During this closure, crews will replace the existing bridge deck with new composite decking boards designed to enhance friction, ensuring the safety of both pedestrians and cyclists. This upgrade is essential for maintaining the trail’s reputation as a safe shared-use path connecting Jamestown to downtown Richmond.

The Virginia Capital Trail is a vital resource for outdoor enthusiasts and local communities, providing a scenic route for biking, walking, and running. With this construction, VDOT aims to enhance the infrastructure, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience for users.

Additionally, plans for the Trail757 project are underway, aiming to eventually connect the Capital Trail with Colonial Williamsburg, further enriching the region’s recreational opportunities.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: As work begins on December 1, updates will be provided by VDOT, especially regarding any changes to the timeline or scope of the project. Users are encouraged to plan alternate routes and stay informed about trail conditions during this period.

The community is urged to share this information to prepare for the upcoming closure and ensure safety for all trail users. Stay tuned for more updates as this important construction project unfolds.
