Salvation Army Launches Urgent Red Kettle Campaign to Aid Families

UPDATE: The Salvation Army’s Fitchburg Corps officially launched its urgent Red Kettle Campaign on November 12, 2023, amid escalating community needs. Local officials, volunteers, and community members gathered at the nonprofit’s Water Street headquarters, ringing bells to kick off a campaign aiming to raise $125,000 this holiday season.

As snow flurries set the scene, longtime Salvation Army Envoy Lynette Valentine-Warren highlighted the increased demand for assistance. “The need is great. People are hungry, and the food pantry has been a revolving door,” she stated, emphasizing the impact of recent economic challenges, including the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Valentine-Warren urged community members to “give with joy,” as many who once donated are now seeking help themselves. “It’s tough for them,” she noted, calling for increased participation in this year’s campaign.

Fitchburg Mayor Sam Squailia joined the call, assuring the community that all funds raised will directly benefit local residents, where approximately 35% rely on SNAP benefits. “Every donation matters,” he stressed, highlighting the campaign’s importance to those in need.

The event featured a special moment as the first donation, a check for $1,000 from Herb White in memory of his late wife, was placed in the red kettle. White, a dedicated volunteer with a 41-year legacy at the Salvation Army, shared his commitment to continuing their charitable work.

With QR codes on red kettles, donations can be made effortlessly, allowing those without cash to contribute. The campaign’s link can be found at give.salvationarmy.org/campaign/729445/donate.

The Fitchburg Corps has been operational for over 135 years and relies on the iconic Red Kettle Campaign to support local families during the holidays. This season, the Massachusetts Division aims to raise a total of $2.3 million to combat rising poverty and assist families struggling to meet basic needs.

As the community rallies together, the Salvation Army encourages families to volunteer as bell ringers, fostering a spirit of togetherness and generosity. “Let’s fill the kettles and make it the best holiday season ever,” Valentine-Warren said, reminding attendees that “it takes a village” to support those in need.

As the campaign progresses, the Salvation Army Fitchburg Corps continues to serve as a critical lifeline for families, providing food, gifts, and shelter to those facing hardship. This year, more than ever, community support is essential to ensure that no one is left behind during the holiday season.
