UPDATE: A remarkable surge in dachshund adoptions is transforming lives at Jacksonville’s Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) as of this week. The shelter is experiencing an influx of over 70 dachshunds, spurred by a viral TikTok video from local creator Bethany Michel showcasing these lovable “wiener dogs.”
The excitement is palpable as the shelter reports that 16 dachshunds are already on-site and rapidly finding their forever homes. This uptick in adoptions began when a local breeder overwhelmed by their breeding arrangement reached out for help. ACPS officers quickly mobilized to assist, responding to the urgent situation effectively.
Chief Michael Bricker shared that the response has been overwhelming, with roughly 10 dachshunds adopted almost immediately. Additionally, another six were placed with rescue groups, ensuring these dogs find loving placements.
A significant factor driving this rapid adoption rate has been the influence of Bethany Michel. Her engaging TikTok videos have consistently highlighted animals at ACPS, but her recent post featuring the new dachshund arrivals went viral, amassing over 1.5 million views. “I never expected this video to reach so many people,” Michel stated. “It was all about spreading awareness, especially with the influx of dogs.”
The immediate impact of this viral video is evident, as public interest surged to the point where the shelter had to announce there were no dachshunds available for adoption. Chief Bricker noted, “While the dachshunds are a major draw, we have approximately 300 other dogs eagerly waiting for homes. The attention has accelerated adoptions for these animals as well.” In fact, the presence of the 16 dachshunds has helped another 20 to 25 dogs find homes that may not have been adopted as quickly.
Looking ahead, ACPS anticipates another 30 dachshunds arriving next week, with potentially more following. To keep the community informed, the shelter is actively utilizing its social media channels, particularly Facebook, to announce when dachshunds will be available for adoption.
In addition to the dachshund focus, ACPS is running a free adoption promotion throughout October as part of their “clear the cages” campaign. This initiative is an excellent opportunity for potential adopters to find new furry companions. The excitement continues as adoptable dogs will be showcased at the Jacksonville Jaguars game this weekend during a “tailgate” event, increasing their chances of finding loving families.
The story of these dachshunds highlights the incredible power of social media and local animal welfare efforts in fostering community engagement and promoting animal adoptions. As ACPS continues to leverage these platforms, the hope is that more animals will find their forever homes.
