UPDATE: New York is under urgent freeze warnings as an Arctic air blast delivers the season’s first snowfall. Millions in the tri-state area are waking up to icy conditions this morning, with temperatures plunging to between 29 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued freeze warnings for parts of southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey, and Southeast New York, including Northern Queens and Southern Queens Counties. These warnings remain in effect until 9 AM today. Meteorologists caution that “frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation,” urging residents to take immediate action to protect their plants.
According to AccuWeather, a significant lake-effect snow event is underway, fueled by cold winds from the Great Lakes. This weather pattern is expected to produce snowfall from Lake Superior to Lake Ontario, with the heaviest snow bands impacting areas south and east of the lakeshores. AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Chad Merrill noted that dramatic hourly snowfall rates are possible, particularly in the snow belts.
Travelers should brace for hazardous conditions, as snow showers could accumulate enough to disrupt travel. “Residents who live in the snow belts should prepare for treacherous driving conditions and near-zero visibility at times through early Tuesday,” Merrill added.
New York City is experiencing its first snow showers from late last night into today, with temperatures remaining significantly below normal. Daytime highs are expected to only reach the upper 30s to lower 40s, while wind chills will keep temperatures feeling like they are in the 30s.
As the day progresses, some rain or snow showers are also likely, according to the NWS. By Tuesday night, conditions are expected to ease, as milder air begins to flow into the region. However, meteorologists warn that this early winter onset is likely a harbinger of more cold outbreaks and snowstorms ahead.
Winter doesn’t officially begin until December 21, but residents should prepare for potential snow and cold throughout November. Now is the time to ensure your winter tires are ready, as this first significant snowfall signals the beginning of a potentially harsh winter season.
Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops, and take care as you navigate the icy roads.
