URGENT UPDATE: Restaurants along the Jersey Shore are actively participating in a shell recycling initiative that transforms discarded oyster and clam shells into vital coastal reefs, enhancing marine habitats and improving water quality. This innovative program, in collaboration with Sysco, is rapidly expanding, while other reef enhancement projects face setbacks due to a looming federal government shutdown.
More than 30 restaurants across Ocean, Atlantic, and Cape May counties are already involved in this groundbreaking effort. Instead of being tossed into landfills, these shells are being collected and repurposed to bolster oyster reefs in local waterways, which serve as crucial habitats for marine life and help combat erosion during increasingly severe storms linked to climate change.
John Yates, Sysco Foods Area President, emphasized the program’s zero-cost model, stating, “We’re going to the restaurants already. So this is a zero cost to the customer, zero cost to us.” This partnership is set to significantly increase participation, adding hundreds more restaurants across a much broader area.
However, the urgency of this initiative is amplified by the disruption of other oyster reef enhancement projects across the state, which are currently suspended due to the federal government shutdown. LaTourette highlighted the ongoing issues, saying, “That is an ongoing disruption that we are experiencing right now today. There are holdups in ensuring that our environmental infrastructure projects are proceeding.”
