Major Snowstorm to Hit Mammoth Mountain Before Opening Day

URGENT UPDATE: A significant snowstorm is set to hit Mammoth Mountain just days before the resort’s anticipated opening day on Friday, Nov. 14, 2025. This major weather event will bring much-needed snow to the Eastern Sierras, enhancing the excitement for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.

A strong Pacific low-pressure system is moving into California, expected to deliver between 1 to 2 feet of snow at elevations over 9,000 feet. Meteorologists from the National Weather Service predict a 90% chance that the upper mountain will receive at least 1 foot of snow. “It looks pretty good,” stated Chris Johnston, a meteorologist, emphasizing the robust nature of the incoming storm.

The weather shift is anticipated to begin on Wednesday, Nov. 12, with snowfall expected to intensify by Thursday, Nov. 13. The forecast indicates strong winds, setting the stage for favorable skiing conditions later in the week. Mammoth Mountain, which boasts over 3,500 acres of skiable terrain and sits at an elevation of 11,053 feet, is eager to welcome its annual influx of more than 1.3 million skiers, primarily from Southern California.

While the resort received 16 inches of snow in October, last season’s total of 286 inches fell short of average, making this storm particularly crucial. Vice President of Marketing and Sales, Joani Lynch, expressed optimism about the storm’s potential impact on the opening day. “If we can’t make it Friday, we will aim for the first day there is enough snow on the ground,” she said, noting the warmer temperatures experienced recently.

To open successfully, the resort requires a snow base of 12 to 18 inches, which will need to be compacted for optimal skiing conditions. Lynch hopes for colder temperatures to complement both natural and manmade snow, ensuring a solid base for the season.

In a wider context, the storm will also affect Southern California, with the San Bernardino Mountains expecting their first snow accumulations of at least a couple of inches. Forecasters also predict snow showers in the San Gabriel Mountains on Thursday and Friday, although accumulations may be minimal.

As the countdown to the season opener continues, all eyes are on the skies. With conditions looking favorable, Mammoth Mountain is poised to kick off its 72nd year of winter sports with a bang. Stay tuned for updates as the snowstorm develops and impacts the resort’s opening plans.
