Amsterdam Aldermen Secure Seats; Kowalczyk Wins Key Race

UPDATE: Montgomery County voters have made pivotal decisions in local elections, confirming all five incumbent aldermen in Amsterdam will retain their positions. The latest unofficial results from the Montgomery County Board of Elections reveal that Democrats will maintain their 4-1 majority on the Common Council.

In a decisive showing, three sitting Democrats successfully defended their seats against Republican and Conservative challengers. Notably, Ward 4 Alderman Christopher Carpenter and Ward 2 Alderman Rich Holoday both ran unopposed.

In the only contested race for the Montgomery County Legislature, incumbent Democrat Maria Flint Kowalczyk has secured 452 votes, defeating Republican challenger James Eagan, who garnered 320 votes. Kowalczyk’s victory represents a robust 17-point lead, ensuring her continued presence as one of two Democrats in the Republican-controlled Legislature.

Kowalczyk, an Amsterdam native, campaigned vigorously on her commitment to the community, emphasizing her dedication to serving residents. “I am honored to be re-elected and ready to continue working for our community,” she stated in her victory speech.

While the election largely favored incumbents, the Montgomery County Legislature will see three new members joining its ranks. Thomas Elwood, Michael Muhlebeck, and Aurelio Fiorillo are set to fill the vacant seats after running unopposed. Elwood succeeds District 1 Legislator Martin Kelly, who reached the county’s term limit, while Muhlebeck replaces District 3 Legislator Herbert Allen, who chose not to seek re-election. Fiorillo steps in for the late District 5 Legislator Daniel Wilson, who tragically died in a plane crash in July.

These results underscore a significant moment for local governance in Montgomery County, reflecting the community’s choices and priorities. As official results are finalized, local leaders are preparing to transition into their new roles, highlighting the importance of civic engagement and representation.

For Montgomery County residents, these elections mark a continuation of leadership and a chance for fresh perspectives on the Legislature. Stay tuned for further updates and detailed analysis as results are certified.
