The recent annual conference of the International County/City Management Association (ICMA) in downtown Tampa spotlighted a significant initiative aimed at improving the lives of foster youth. The conference showcased the Duffels of Dignity program, developed by Hillsborough County Children’s Services. This initiative aims to provide young individuals entering foster care with a more dignified way to transport their belongings, replacing the typical plastic trash bags with sturdy duffel bags.
During the event, delegates took time from their schedules to assemble 300 duffel bags for distribution across Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas Counties. Participants worked together, packing each bag with essential items, teddy bears, and personal care products, all donated by local organizations and individuals. According to a report from HCFL Government, over 2,000 personal care items were collected for this project, reflecting a strong community commitment to support children in need.
The duffel bags were filled with practical items, including toiletries and heart-shaped cards where attendees wrote encouraging notes to the children. This thoughtful touch emphasized the program’s goal of providing not just material support but also emotional encouragement to foster youth facing challenging circumstances.
Once assembled, the duffel bags were distributed to various local foster care and support agencies. These included the Children’s Network of Hillsborough County, Family Support Services of the Suncoast, West Florida Foster Care Services Inc., and the Children & Families in Need of Services program. Through this collaborative effort, the agencies aim to restore a sense of dignity and normalcy to the lives of these young individuals.
Community members interested in contributing to the Duffels of Dignity program are encouraged to donate new or gently used duffel bags, suitcases, and backpacks. Unopened personal care items such as toothbrushes, shampoo, and deodorant are also welcome, with many items flying off the shelves during the conference. Donations can be dropped off at the Children’s Services administrative office located at 3191 Clay Mangum Lane, Tampa, FL 33618, or shipped directly via the program’s Amazon Wish List.
This initiative not only provides essential items but also fosters a sense of community involvement, highlighting the importance of compassion in addressing the needs of vulnerable youth. As the program continues to gain support, it serves as a reminder of the positive impacts that collective efforts can have on those in need.
