Arduboy FX-C Launches with USB-C and Enhanced Multiplayer Features

The Arduboy FX-C, a new iteration of the popular credit card-sized gaming device, is now available for purchase, featuring significant upgrades including multiplayer support via USB-C. Priced at $99, the latest model aims to improve the user experience while addressing challenges posed by rising tariffs.

Creator Kevin Bates recently introduced the FX-C, following the launch of the Arduboy Mini and a uniquely designed banana-shaped version of the original Arduboy. This latest model includes a USB-C port that facilitates charging, syncing, and allows users to engage in multiplayer gaming with a second device using the included USB-C cable or any compatible Thunderbolt 3 cable.

Pricing and Availability

The Arduboy FX-C is available in a limited Founder’s edition featuring purple buttons, with only 500 units offered through the Arduboy online store. This edition is priced at $99. Additionally, a two-pack option is available, limited to 100 units, priced at $178. Bates addressed concerns about the price increase from the previous Arduboy FX, which was priced at $79, stating that the current price is “actually more than I want to charge but the tariff situation means this is the only way to stay in business.”

For those seeking a more affordable option, Bates announced that a Standard edition with green buttons will soon be available through Amazon, which will include free shipping.

Specifications and Gaming Features

While the overall specifications of the Arduboy FX-C remain modest, it retains the same ATmega32u4 processor as the Arduino Micro. The device features a 128×64-pixel OLED screen capable of displaying only white pixels without grayscale or anti-aliasing. It also includes six buttons for game control, ensuring a straightforward gaming experience.

The storage capacity has been enhanced from 200 preloaded games available on the previous model to accommodate up to 300 titles on the new FX-C. This expansion makes the open-source handheld device more appealing to casual gamers who prefer to enjoy a wide range of games without needing to develop their own.

With the introduction of the Arduboy FX-C, gaming enthusiasts can look forward to an enriched experience that combines nostalgic design with modern functionality, all while addressing the economic pressures facing small businesses in the tech industry.
