URGENT UPDATE: First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas, is in the midst of a significant rebuilding effort following a catastrophic four-alarm fire that destroyed its historic red-brick sanctuary last year. The reconstruction is projected to continue until Easter 2028, but the church’s leadership emphasizes that this crisis has only strengthened their resolve and unity.
As of August, church staff members were still grappling with challenges, including the absence of permanent power in their offices. According to Ben Lovvorn, Senior Executive Pastor of First Baptist, the church has prioritized consistent and purposeful communication among staff and congregation to ensure everyone feels involved in the rebuilding process.
“We’ve been very purposeful about communicating with our staff — and our congregation — so that they know and understand what’s going on, and that they are a part of the process,” Lovvorn stated. “At other organizations, this situation would lead to tremendous turnover, but our entire team has stayed intact.” This unity has been crucial for the church’s 16,000 members during this tumultuous time.
The church’s resilience can be attributed to its strong foundation of shared faith and purpose. Lovvorn noted, “Whether they’re a minister or work in our accounting department or in the facilities department, they’re part of something greater.” This collective mission has fostered an environment where staff members feel valued and engaged, even amidst adversity.
To bolster morale, First Baptist has organized regular events such as monthly all-staff leadership luncheons. For example, the August luncheon featured food from Babe’s Chicken, helping to bring the team together in a supportive atmosphere. Additionally, “staff chapel” sessions provide a space for prayer and reflection, allowing employees to step away from their daily responsibilities and connect with their shared values.
Reflecting on the church’s history, Lovvorn remarked, “Throughout its more than 155 years in downtown Dallas, there have been good times and difficult times. But God has always been faithful in providing for us and seeing us through every season.”
As First Baptist Dallas continues its recovery and rebuilding process, the focus remains on maintaining a strong team dynamic and ensuring that the church community feels supported and informed. The leadership’s commitment to fostering an environment of transparency and unity is expected to play a vital role in navigating the challenges ahead.
