UPDATE: Voting has been significantly disrupted at multiple polling locations in New Jersey after alarming emailed bomb threats were received this morning, November 7, 2023. Authorities are on high alert as they investigate the threats, which have already forced some polling sites to pause operations temporarily.
According to Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, law enforcement swiftly responded to threats affecting polling places across Bergen, Essex, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Passaic Counties. While many locations have since reopened, some voters are being redirected to nearby polling venues to ensure their ability to cast their ballots safely.
In light of the threats, Ridgewood Public Schools announced closures for the day, although polling stations in Ridgewood will remain open with an increased police presence to reassure voters.
Attorney General Platkin emphasized the commitment to maintaining a secure electoral process, stating,
“We are grateful to the brave law enforcement officers and the dedicated poll workers who are working tirelessly to ensure everyone’s safety… We will not tolerate any attempts to interfere with our elections.”
Voters are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to local authorities immediately by calling 911.
As the situation develops, election officials are working closely with federal and local law enforcement partners to ensure a free and fair election.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to monitor this situation closely. Voters are encouraged to share their experiences and any concerns they may have regarding the disruptions.
